8 Wrestlers Who Faked Their Retirement

6. Randy Savage

Five consecutive elbow drops weren't enough to save Randy Savage's career, as The Macho Man put it all on the line in trying to see off The Ultimate Warrior once and for all at WrestleMania VII. His tank utterly depleted, it took a single, decisive spear to drop the glittery curtain on Savage's wrestling story, as The Warrior pinned him impertinently, dominantly, with a single boot on the chest.

After the humiliation, The Macho Man's manager Sherri rushed to the ring - but she didn't come to his aid. Instead, she beat him up for losing, literally kicking him whilst he was down. We all know how this ended; Miss Elizabeth, coincidentally pictured at ringside throughout the match, found forgiveness in her heart, chucking Sherri out as she reunited with her lobster.

The retirement lasted all the way until the pair's nuptials at SummerSlam '91 (as it happens, coinciding with their real life divorce), when Jake Roberts' poor choice of a snake for a gift caused a ruckus at the reception. Savage's actual retirement didn't come until fourteen years later, when health issues closed the door on his brief TNA flirtation.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
