8 Wrestlers Who Quit On Top

4. Shawn Michaels

In the sage words of serial debunker Jonathan Frakes, Crown Jewel 2018 never happened. That Last of the Summer wine re-run between D-Generation X and the Brothers of Destruction? It's a made up tale. A total fabrication.

Everybody knows Shawn Michaels retired in the most glittering of circumstances possible some eight years earlier, bowing out in an all-time classic against The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI. Few people exit the industry on their own terms, but The Heartbreak Kid, still in fine fettle, had the chance to show one last time - a year on from his similarly stellar outing with the same opponent - why he's considered one of the greatest of all time.

Unlike the 25 vintage, which Triple H and Randy Orton inexplicably thought they could top, Michaels' swansong went on last. You can't go out any higher than headlining WrestleMania.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
