8 Wrestling Exceptions That Prove The 'Top Guy' Rule
5. Rey Mysterio
Tiny. Tiny, tiny, tiny. And ethnic. Not to say these things get you squashed but Rey Rey had to get out from behind two of the boss blind spots when it comes to talent. Vince apparently loved Rey and saw a lot of potential for exciting matches and exhaustive branding. Sounds too good to be true, right?
The smallest man on this list, Rey Mysterio the second of his name actually found success because of his differences from other main eventers. He represents a harmonious relationship between the giants and the smaller guys. And for a while, the crowd was a sea of Mysterio masks.
He does prove the top guy rule perhaps more than anyone in his matches. Despite his white hot luchador skills, the party line was that Rey was the underdog in every fight he was in. His selling ability, skill and connection to the fans made these potential squash matches David vs. Goliath every time. Bringing high stakes and must see feel to all of his feuds.
Beating Luchadores and Heavyweights alike and even holding the big gold belt, Mysterio perhaps perpetuated the reductive stereotype about size in the WWE, but he proved that you can get out from under it.
