8 Wrestling Gimmicks That Wouldn't Work In 2016

7. The Man's Man

Another gimmick that didn't exactly set the world alight when it was first attempted, the stereotypical man is a completely outdated persona in 2016. A frequent claim is that no matter how wretched the gimmick a talented worker can make it work, but the 'Man's Man' gimmick seems to claim otherwise. William Regal is as talented as they come, but not even a man of his ability could make this work (although he was dealing with some personal issues at the time).

In fact, the only way this could work in 2016 would be if it was taken back 100 years or so, similar to the Vaudevillains. If a character was introduced as being an Old Timey Hard B*stard, you could get behind it. A moustachioed man who drinks whiskey for breakfast could have an ironic charm.

But a man in a hard hat with an axe? No.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
