8 Wrestling Gimmicks That Wouldn't Work In 2016

6. The King

This is more based on recent history than pure speculation, but WWE needs to stop teasing pushing individuals as 'The King' in 2016. Even the most cursory glance at the last few attempts to do so makes for miserable reading; King Barrett was released last week, 2010 winner Sheamus' career hit a wall with the gimmick, 2008 winner William Regal was suspended shortly after.

WWE doesn't seem to care for its kings outside of making them wear ridiculous attire and transforming them into a laughing stock. The King of the Ring tournament could still be a vital cog in the WWE year, but it is telling that the most successful and memorable winners of that tournament (Bret Hart and Steve Austin) were only kings in a metaphorical sense, rather than actually living out the gimmick.

The king is dead, long live the king.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
