While you can just about get away with a bad guy colour commentator, turning your play-by-play guy heel always seems like kind of a risky move. You can't really call it straight and applaud villainous tactics at the same time.

That said, the appeal of using JR as the driving force of a storyline instead of just the man who describes it is obvious. He's clearly got a great nose for the business, and he spent years sitting next to Vince McMahon too (some of that evil had to rub off). Unfortunately, the fans didn't see it the same way.

After watching JR berate and then physically attack a young Michael Cole - who had stepped into his announcing shoes while he was away for medical reasons - the crowd applauded rather than admonished.

They could have persisted with it, but given that Cole wasn't yet ready to permanently replace him in the Raw hot seat (and, if you listen to some people, still isn't), it didn't really seem worthwhile. Soon enough, he was back on the side of good.
