8 Wrestling Heels Who Took Real Hatred And Turned It Into Heat
7. The New Day
As individual wrestlers, Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E were going nowhere. They were frequently used as enhancement talent and not one of them had anywhere near what you could call a personality. Then something strange happened: Xavier Woods began to appear on TV in a suit and tie looking serious. Before long, Big E and Kofi had joined him. The fans began to speculate if there was a new heel stable in the works, perhaps as some sort of spiritual continuation of the Nation of Domination, which is perhaps a little racist - you wouldn't assume that the Straight Edge Society was a continuation of the Hart Foundation just because both teams were all-caucasian. But then the team vanished from TV without word. Shortly thereafter, the New Day was born. And they were terrible. Ostensibly a gospel-themed group who liked to clap and be positive, the team were a received with little or no response from the fans. They didn't offer any explanation for their actions, they were simply happy, and clapped. They were like the Spirit Squad but without self-awareness. The fans, as they do when asked to like someone without good reason, rejected the New Day and started chanting 'New... Day Sucks' in time with their clapping. Instead of ignoring this, the New Day began to lash out at the fans and what once was empty bland babyface celebration became self-delusional borderline-maniacal positivity. Given the green light to boo this absolute anti-charmers, the Extreme Rules audience in Chicago pelted the team with hate. And now they're despised tag team champions.
