8 Wrestling Heels Who Took Real Hatred And Turned It Into Heat

3. Edge & Lita

The hottest angle of 2005 was a result of real-life betrayal and heartbreak. The relationship between Matt Hardy and Lita was well-documented for crossing from TVland into real-life and for years the Hardy Boyz and Lita had been one of the beloved trios of the Attitude Era and beyond. When the two were separated by the brand extension and began touring apart, Lita found herself with a road partner: Adam Copeland, otherwise known as Edge. After the two had been travelling together for a while, an affair developed between the two. When Matt Hardy found out about it and began, perhaps understandably, kicking off about it in a huge way, both behind the scenes and online, he was subsequently fired. Of course, the internet being the outlet for bruised egos that it is, Matt Hardy was able to unload on a number of different blogs about the true reason for his dismissal. The crowd turned on Edge & Lita and the persistent "You Screwed Matt" chants began, at one point even publicly acknowledged on a WWE-sanctioned PPV, ECW One Night Stand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y52DnD_fasI Matt Hardy was eventually brought back by popular demand and he and Edge engaged in a feud born of real hatred. But while Matt Hardy, even after winning the feud, slowly began to slip down the card, Edge and Lita flourished in their heel personas, Edge cashed in Money in the Bank soon after and transformed into what would soon become the Ultimate Opportunist. Lita, in turn, embraced the somewhat unsettling chants of 'slut' and began dressing like an evil seductrix, helping her new man cheat his way to victories. The two engaged John Cena in a protracted feud in 2006 and soon found themselves as legitimate main event heels. Cheaters do prosper after all.
