9 Best Martial Artists Turned Wrestlers

4. Rob Van Dam

With extensive training in Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Kickboxing, and Kendo, it was only natural that Rob Szatkowski would enter pro wrestling with a gimmick based on iconic action star Jean-Claude Van Damme. In fact, before he hit it big in ECW, RVD had even taken roles in some obscure, direct-to-cable kung fu flicks to showcase those talents. Although Van Dam's competitive background in martial arts is much thinner than most on this list, he did take home second place at a Michigan Toughman Contest. So that's...something. But a lack of competition hasn't stopped him from using his martial arts skills to great effect in the ring. Honestly, he may be the best showman of anybody to use this type of gimmick, and can execute real martial arts techniques that not only look devastating, but would likely knock somebody's block off in real life, too. Maybe he's too flashy for MMA, but there's no denying the guy has some fancy footwork and a solid spin kick.
