9 Best Martial Artists Turned Wrestlers

3. Steve Blackman

There's no doubt that Steve Blackman was one of the most wooden "personalities" to ever enter the WWE. With a gimmick based on a pretty unspectacular movie (The Perfect Weapon) starring a similarly uncharismatic actor (Kenpo artist Jeff Speakman), Steve Blackman favored the use of eskrima sticks to beat the hell out of his opponents. Blackman attempted to get into pro wrestling in the late 80s, working for Stu Hart's Stampede Wrestling and trying out for WWE working house shows. But during a devastating two-year bout with malaria, he was sidelined from wrestling. As part of his physical therapy, Blackman began training in Tae Kwon Do and eskrima. So when he was able to land a full-time contract with WWE nearly ten years after his first matches, he incorporated his newfound love of martial arts into his gimmick. And although he had zero charisma to speak of, Blackman was mostly able to let his fighting skills speak for themselves. He now runs a self-defense school in Pennsylvania.
