9 Best Post-Royal Rumble WWE Raw Moments
6. Bret Hart Quits (1997)
Some have traced the beginning of the Attitude Era to the famous "Austin 3:16" promo that followed Stone Cold's victory in the 1996 King of Ring tournament - others, however, have cited Bret Hart's razor-tongued promos around the turn of the following year.
If you've seen even one of them, then you'll know exactly why they are regarded as such a watershed moment. Like CM Punk 15 years later, the Hitman completely threw out the wrestling rule book, breaking kayfabe to directly call out the suits behind the camera.
This was even more significant in the mid-1990s, however, because it was before Vince McMahon had even really debuted his heel authority figure character that we now all know and love. Bret accusing him of giving HBK and Austin preferential treatment was huge.
In hindsight, The Excellence of Execution probably wishes he really did hand his notice in for real around this time. It would have saved him from going through a horrid next 11 months, culminating with the Screwjob in November. You live and learn.
