9 Guilty Pleasures That Wrestling Fans Secretly Love

9. Hate Watching

We can all say that we want WWE to improve because we like to see wrestling in a good place. And we can all tell each other that secretly we really want to see TNA flourish and do well because it is for the better of the business and all the people employed there. But let€™s be very honest here €“ most of us are secretly guilty of enjoying seeing promotions make a train wreck out of their programming. It€™s contrasts with our other desires as wrestling fans (ie the desire to see a good show), and it goes against all of our better judgment. But when a product lets you down time and time again (as wrestling inevitably does €“ even when it is outstanding) you can€™t help but feel a little bit smug about it. There is a logical reason for this. Human beings are simple creatures, with cognitive functions that we don€™t entirely understand. So when we see something that confirms our beliefs we inevitably enjoy it €“ even if it€™s a belief that we wish we didn€™t have. So for example, when we complain that the WWE always falls back on Kane and the Big Show without trying to build fresh heels, we get a little bit of satisfaction when WWE inevitably does just this. We hate seeing Kane get YET ANOTHER title shot and we hate seeing Big Show do YET ANOTHER heel/face turn. But in amongst that hate is a little biological spark in your brain that briefly provides pleasure, and tells you €˜hey you were right €“ good job smarty pants€™! In fact, if you already knew this and have accepted this information your brain will be subconsciously making you feel good because you have just had your perceptions confirmed. Equally, if you believe that you have complete control over your instincts and subconscious€well you will probably be furious at this assertion, and are on your way to abuse me in the comments. Either way €“ you€™re proving the point to be true. We hate watch WWE and the more we get angry with their booking, the better we feel (albeit briefly) when they screw things up again.
