9 Guilty Pleasures That Wrestling Fans Secretly Love
8. Marking Out When You See A Wrestler Outside Of Wrestling
Trainwreck was one of my favourite movies of last year. I love Amy Schumer and Bill Hader and thought it was hands down the funniest movie I had seen in years. If you havent seen it then watch it. Its outstanding. But it wasnt just Amy Schumer that made me laugh. More than anyone, John Cena had me in tears. And it wasnt just because he was so outstanding in the film. If I am totally honest it was because it was really fun seeing somebody that I recognise as one particular character with one particular set of skills, playing so against type. And it was fun seeing a wrestler in a mainstream production which is something I know all wrestling fans relate to. I will watch almost anything that features a wrestler, no matter how garbage it is. And I dont mean WWE films you couldnt pay me to watch those viruses. What I mean is if wrestlers are on an episode of some terrible game show, or if Cena is going to be in the new Tina Fey movie, then they have my attention instantly. I dont understand entirely what it is. I think part of it is just simply the fact that you get to have your interests legitimised. After all, if the Rock is good enough to be the biggest star in Hollywood today, doesnt that mean that wrestling is really as interesting as I think it is? I mean thats where he honed his personality isnt it? What is also weird is it only works one way. Bring in a celebrity to Raw and youve lost me before the show starts (I tuned out of a Raw while they had those guest hosts that period was horrendous). But the moment you get a wrestler out there doing their thing in a non wrestling entertainment environment then I am sold. And given the feedback I see online I know that I am not the only one guilty of this rather childish excitement.
