Fans were somewhat confused when Dolph Ziggler won the WWE United States Championship back at Clash of Champions, and that confusion was exacerbated when The Show-Off seemingly abandoned his new belt. A tournament was quickly booked to crown a new champion: a single-elimination affair that came down to Bobby Roode and Jinder Mahal.

The two battled for the title on last week’s SmackDown, the match being made on the fly following the two semi-finals. Would it not have made more sense for the final to take place on the prestigious stage that is the Royal Rumble? The bout was rushed, muting Roode’s eventual championship celebration.

WWE’s secondary championships have been treated in an indifferent manner for far too long. Every year fans hatch plans to rebuild both titles, safe in the knowledge that WWE isn’t going to give two hoots about either one. This was an opportunity to crown a new champion on a big stage, but instead, the company decided to do so unannounced on television.

Go figure.
