9 Mistakes WWE Made With The Debut Of The Cruiserweight Division

4. Brian Kendrick As Number One Contender

As it happens, it was Brian Kendrick who would ultimately be named the number one contender, eventually facing (and losing to) TJ Perkins in the Cruiserweight Championship match at this past Sunday’s Clash of Champions pay-per-view.

Now, I don’t necessarily have a problem with Brian Kendrick and his positioning as the division’s top heel; in fact, I think it’s good that a bona fide bad guy has been established and that it’s an experienced hand such as Kendrick.

However, here I feel that the issue lies in the fact that it’s somewhat emblematic of the company’s plans for the division as a whole.

Having spent a number of years in the company already, you could say argue Kendrick is a “WWE guy” who’s very much familiar with the “WWE style”. So rather than providing us with a Cruiserweight match exhibiting insane high-flying and non-stop action, the type than Gran Metalik or Cedric Alexander could have provided, the Cruiserweight match between Perkins and Kendrick was more of a straightforward WWE encounter between two guys who just happened to be small.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a place for Kendrick in this Cruiserweight division, but I feel like for the first showcase on PPV, Perkins vs. Kendrick may not have been the most exciting combination.
