When analysing World Championship Wrestling throughout the 1990s, it's fair to say that several key decisions stopped the promotion ever reaching its full potential. For every genuinely great idea, another followed that just served to ruin things. For those wishing to emotionally invest in WCW, that was frustrating.

For around a year before the big showdown in-ring at Starrcade 1997, Eric Bischoff showed remarkable restraint. Not willing to give away his biggest match, Bischoff kept Sting out of the ring until December '97. Live on pay-per-view, the vigilante babyface would exact revenge on a man who had come into his world and darkened it.

Hollywood Hogan, leader of the nWo, was to be vanquished by Sting at Starrcade. Unfortunately, things didn't quite pan out that way. Firstly, Hogan pinned Sting. Referee Nick Patrick was supposed to count quickly, something he neglected to do.

Therefore, even after the match had been restarted and Sting won, fans had watched their hero crumble to the villain. This should have been the end of the New World Order, at least for a while. The gimmick definitely outlived any usefulness, and Hogan must take some blame for that.
