9 Promises AEW Have Made Since Launching (And HAVE Kept)
6. No Scripted Promos
Scripted promos are the work of the devil, but regurgitating points that have been made a thousand times before would be pointless.
Tony Khan believes that he doesn't like putting words in wrestlers' mouths because it invariably leaves them coming off like bad actors. When speaking to Wade Keller, he promised fewer "ridiculous, scripted promos," because in his words, when you have guys like Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho on your roster, "it would be insane not to let those guys talk." He wanted his characters to feel authentic and wouldn't be forcing anybody into doing anything that they don't believe in themselves, which seems to be how AEW has done things since launching.
It's hard to get a true read on this as we're not backstage, though AEW's promos have none of the awkward, stunted hallmarks of rampant over-scripting. Guys like Jericho, Moxley, Britt Baker, Sammy Guevara, and more feel like human beings, not robots reading lines. They might be handed bullet points before the show but if they are, they're making those points their own.
