7. Classic Feuds

For any wrestler trying to make a claim at being the GOAT, they’ve got to have at least one all-time classic feud under their belt. Ric Flair has monumental rivalries with Dusty Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat and Sting. Steve Austin had Vince McMahon. The Rock had Triple H. Wrestling is built around these rivalries and our emotional investment in them.

In a post-kayfabe world there will never be another Freebirds/Von Erich-type war because the audience won't allow themselves to get that lost in the heat. Our suspension of disbelief is no longer that strong. But that doesn’t mean the workers can’t captivate us through sheer storytelling.

When you make a list of wrestling’s all-time greatest feuds, it would be a crime to exclude Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels. Not only did the two men work an incredible angle that got intensely personal, but the matches the program yielded were classics as well. The Heartbreak Kid can pull of **** wrestling the hard camera if he wanted to, but when he was in there with Y2J he kicked it up a notch as both men turned in some of the finest performances of their careers.

He’s had a handful of amazing rivalries – many of which were hampered by nonsensical booking – but this one is arguably a top five feud in wrestling history and will be remembered and studied as long as the business exists.
