9 Reasons To Be Optimistic About WWE 2018

4. The WWE Universal Championship

The WWE Universal Championship had a far better 2017 than many expected it to. When Brock Lesnar defeated Goldberg for the title at WrestleMania 33, RAW fans were faced with an absent champion on the flagship show. Lesnar’s sporadic defences almost certainly meant the credibility of the title, already on shaky ground, would be reduced to irrelevance.

Instead, the opposite happened. Lesnar’s infrequent appearances added a certain gravitas to the main event scene on RAW, and allowed performers like Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe and the rest to well and truly shine. Lesnar’s defences all had a rare big fight feel, and the title is now the most prestigious in the company.

Even so, Brock’s one year title reign is likely to come to an end at WrestleMania 34. Roman Reigns will (once again) be coronated as the number one guy in the company, and there will be no shortage of compelling matches waiting for The Big Dog.

The WWE Universal Championship is going to have a very different 2018, adding another fascinating chapter to the brief history of the title.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
