9 Things GFW Must Do Better Than Impact

4. Storylines Need To Evolve

LAX And Veterans Of War
Impact Wrestling

Jeff Jarrett and Dutch Mantell have been in the business a long time. This may be why some of their ideas seem stuck in the past and don't connect with a larger audience.

Case in point, when the two long-time friends came back to power they ran a series of “Make Impact Great Again” videos. They also handed out a bunch of red hats with the phrase on it to people sitting in the front row. Those hats were, of course, playing off of Donald Trump’s infamous “Make America Great Again" garb. Is that really the message they want to send to new viewers?

Some people love Trump. Many more do not. Mantell has expressed his conservative views in the past in interviews and perhaps thought it would be a cute message. He should think of it as a business decision, though, and one that is downright toxic to some fans. Besides that, the previously mentioned LAX has returned to the company and been portrayed as heels because they feel they are hated in their own country. It’s a sentiment that millions of minorities feel on a daily basis. And yet, Impact cast the super patriot babyface team the Veterans of War team to battle them.

Now, if GFW truly is “Global”, then they are sending the wrong message here. No other country on Earth except for America is going to want to see gimmicks where faces are good guys simply because they're Americans. It only plays well in exactly one country...and even then, many aren’t going to be onboard.

Considering this kind of booking logic is deeply ingrained in the creative minds of the promotion, this one may not be going away anytime soon.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
