9 Things We Learned From WWE's Holy Grail: Bret Hart Vs. Tom Magee
6. Tom Magee Had Never Seen The Match Back
Despite unequivocally being Magee's finest hour (or seven minutes) within the industry, he had apparently never seen the match back until this documentary screening. Obviously take that with a pinch of salt because it creates a compelling narrative and contributes to the suggestion that Magee was oblivious to his own infamy, but it's somewhat remarkable considering both the clarity of his memories and that it was clearly being prepared in-house for broadcast.
Of course, the '80s were a different era, and not one in which performers regularly reviewed their own performances. That's not to say there weren't exceptions; after all, the tape somehow found its way into his opponent's possession, as Hart collated his own personal WWE Bretwork. Despite repeated promises to nephew Harry Smith, Hart was never able to find the tape amongst his vast collections, and it only turned up when archivist Mary Kate Anthony started transferring her idol's repertoire to DVD.
