9 Things WWE Got Right At Extreme Rules 2017
7. Giving The Drifter Some PPV Minutes
It was an easy pay day for Elias Sampson at Extreme Rules. Whilst others were being belted with chairs or falling off of cages, he was booked to sit in the middle of the ring and sing poorly. No, The Drifter doesn't have a great set of lungs, but he did manage to get on the wrong side of the audience.
Maybe it was the idea of musical performance on a WWE pay-per-view that had the fans booing (although this was significantly better than Pitbull's dirge at WrestleMania) throughout. Whatever the reason for such hatred, Sampson revelled in it and nailed his performance. He has the potential to be a slow-burning success if WWE play their cards right.
Giving him some pay-per-view minutes to drone on worked better than putting Elias in a throwaway match against someone like Darren Young or Curt Hawkins. The singer-songwriter vibe fits his vagabond character and he got his face on the show. That's a win.
