In the months that followed WrestleMania XXVII, Punk was approaching the end of his tether. Not only that, but he was also approaching the end of his contract.

Seemingly fed up with his lack of opportunities in the main event scene, Punk decided that he was going to leave upon the expiration of his contract in July 2011. In turn, WWE then decided that they’d use that real-life frustration to fuel one of the most memorable angles in recent history.

Punk’s legitimate dissatisfaction was used on-screen and became the basis for the infamous worked shoot on that Las Vegas stage on Jun. 27, 2011.

That speech, and this whole angle, was essentially the culmination of being overlooked for the main event of WrestleMania XXVII, for being unceremoniously stripped of the World Heavyweight Championship, and for generally being doubted from day one by the decision-makers in the office.

It was also the perfect response and an idyllic way for Punk to back-up his own lofty billing. The angle, resultant match at Money in the Bank 2011, and newfound success that came off the back of it, elevated Punk to an unprecedented height and made him an almost-overnight sensation.
