7. The Most Infamous Impromptu Match

The first truly impromptu WrestleMania match also is the most notorious one on our list.

At WrestleMania 9, Bret “Hitman” hard defended his WWF Championship against Yokozuna in the billed main event. It also served as the first Mania main event to not feature Hulk Hogan in some capacity (he was ringside for WrestleMania 4’s closing bout)… or so we thought.

Mr. Fuji used salt to blind Hart, allowing Yoko to topple the Hitman and win the title. Just like that, a heel was walking out of WrestleMania with the world title after winning the main event for the first time.

Not so fast though… Hogan appeared at ringside to protest the chicanery, when Fuji started badmouthing Hogan (who had lost a tag title match alongside Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake earlier in the night). Inexplicably, Fuji challenged Hulk to a world title match on the spot, and Hogan agreed after a still-blinded Hart waved him on.

One leg drop later and Hulk was a five-time WWF Champion. The good times would not last, and Hogan would be gone from WWF by that summer.
