With the Monday Night Wars, wrestling storylines decided that shocks and turns were a must. Logical and realistic booking went out of the window in favours of swerves, as the aim became less ‘produce great wrestling stories’ and more 'ha, you never saw that coming’. WWE has been guilty of this so often, but Impact almost made it part of their brand.

As part of its rebranding, Impact needs to get back to what makes wrestling special in the first place. The story of good defeating bad, of truth and honour overcoming the odds to put the villainous in their place. Professional wrestling is at its heart a tale of persistence, dedication, and the pure prevailing.

There are hundreds of incredible professional wrestlers on the planet, and Impact needs to do little more than put them in the ring and give them 10 to 15 minutes to ply their craft. The better man, woman or team wins, and does so without having to trick the crowd at every opportunity.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
