9 Wrestling Moves That Could Legit Kill You
3. Sleeper Hold
The point of any choke or hold is to stop oxygen moving through the neck to the head. This is unfortunate as that also happens to be where your brain lives.
There are two basic kinds of holds according to the marine handbook, the air choke and the blood choke, with the former cutting off the air to the lungs by compressing the trachea, and the latter cutting off oxygen rich blood on its way to the brain by compressing the carotid artery.
The net result, however, is basically the same. Brain cells begin to die off almost immediately when oxygen is cut off and damage to the brain stem (the "oldest" part of the brain) will mean spending the rest of your days on life support.
Marines are advised to hold a training choke for no more that five seconds due to the horrible damage it can do. An air choke will take a couple of minutes to work, but a blood choke will put someone out in less than 10 seconds.
Carry it on much longer than that and, you guessed it, they so dead.
