It would be nice to know what Vince McMahon, supreme overlord and ruler of WWE, thought would happen when he brought back Hollywood superstar Dave Batista in January 2014 and booked him to win the Royal Rumble. Dave had left WWE as an ultra conceited heel back in 2010 and fans weren't exactly chomping at the bit for an all-conquering comeback.

To be fair to Vince, Batista was of course a proven headliner and a very over babyface in his time. But he'd been gone for four years, and there was a bit of that resentment like The Rock received when he came back from Hollywood in early 2003. WWE should have played it that way but, instead, they decided to go the traditional babyface route.

It didn't work. Fans wanted man of the moment Daniel Bryan and Bryan only. The fans booed big Dave out of the building at the Rumble, turning their venom towards him in protest of Bryan not even being entered into the match. Things didn't get much better from there, with Batista getting booed against Alberto Del Rio.

Ultimately, they were forced to switch him from a blue eye to a villain and placate the fans by giving Bryan his World Title win and WrestleMania moment (which were promised to Batista when he agreed to come back). From there, Batista joined up with his former Evolution buddies Randy Orton and Triple H to battle The Shield. He was a full-blown heel.
