Acknowledge It - WWE's HUGE Problem With Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns Vs Brock Lesnar was a big dull dud, and as of this writing just weeks removed from the match, it's still hard to work out how and why.
In the immediate aftermath of a milquetoast main event, questions were asked about Reigns' physical wellbeing due to a shoulder injury allegedly sustained in the bout. Him not wrestling on television might have raised further red flags (as would him not having an an obvious opponent for WrestleMania Backlash, but more on that later) had it not been for the fact that he's been beating Drew McIntyre on house shows ever since.
If not injuries, what? Could it be a storyline thread WWE completely dropped during the contest itself? Do you remember Reigns showing convincing panic on the shows leading up to WrestleMania, revealing a paranoia underneath the chest-out 'Tribal Chief' veneer? You weren't rewarded for it if so. Outside of (generous) application during the moment Lesnar removed his gloves for another potential bloodletting, it didn't feature.
All of it was formula to a fault. Brock Lesnar formula. Modern Roman Reigns formula. Paul Heyman formula. Speaking of which, Heyman eating an F5 might have helped that transparent kill-shot race that fed into the anticlimactic conclusion. The match was worse than their Crown Jewel 2021, SummerSlam 2018 and WrestleMania 31 main events, when its purpose to be the greatest f*cking thing since Hart/Austin. Better than that, even! They said so!
Reigns' victory, at very very (very) least confirmed that WWE are still totally all in on the 'Head Of The Table' as the company's top star, top heel and irrefutable best champion ever or whatever. Which isn't a funny sentence until you remember this is Roman Reigns we're talking about.
This was their target when he was a young pup masquerading as a 'Big Dog', yet them scraping that multi-year disaster away from the fire is now being celebrated as some miraculous achievement.
Why you always lying, wrestling?
