There was no denying that this match would be the best match of the night. Regardless of whether he’s in the World Title picture or not, John Cena is being given the most match time on virtually every show, and is demonstrating the kind of versatility that would’ve negated many of his naysayers if it was seen five years ago.

The match started off at a very fast pace with Rollins going on offense and pins quickly. It was a clever idea that amplified the idea that Rollins was desperate because he had to perform double duty on the show. Nevertheless, the match soon took a more competitive turn, with both men exchanging advantages several times.

More importantly, both Cena and Rollins actually pulled off something that wasn’t in their comfort zones during this match. Cena revered a Powerbomb into a perfect Frankensteiner, which is a move more associated with a wrestler like Rollins. Meanwhile, Rollins did the ‘power roll-through’ that Cena’s famous for and showed his own strength, despite being smaller than Cena.

This match proved why both men are being pushed so prominently in WWE right now. Rollins is demonstrating all the tools needed to be a World Champion while doing some excellent character work. Meanwhile, Cena has finally evolved into the competitive fighter that makes a wrestler more exciting to watch, which is doing wonders to help him draw in more viewers.

With any luck, we’ll be seeing matches like this one more often soon.
