Backstage Details On WWE's Interest In Britt Baker

WWE had interest in signing Britt Baker, says Adam Cole, BUT...

Britt Baker
AEW

WWE had planned on making a play for AEW standout and Women's World Champion Britt Baker had she become available this year, reports Fightful Select.

The writeup notes that when WWE were operating under the assumption that Adam Cole's contract was up towards the end of 2021, there was a belief that Baker's AEW deal may be expiring before the calendar ticked over into 2022 as well. WWE would have likely made an attempt to sign her if that were the case.

Baker ended up signing an AEW contract extension earlier this month. The Women's Champion never entered negotiations with WWE, who decided against approaching her to avoid tampering with a wrestler contracted to another promotion.

Cole spoke on WWE's interest in his girlfriend during an appearance on Renee Paquette's Oral Sessions earlier this week. The former NXT Champion claimed that WWE officials would ask Adam to let them know if she ever became available, with the duo regularly talking about working for the same company (h/t Fightful):-

"Britt was in such an interesting spot where, because of AEW and because she's so talented, stuff blew up for her overnight. That's how it felt. She had been doing great on the Independents and had been doing well and formed relationships with other girls and other promoters and all of a sudden, here she is with this brand new company that is on fire and she's knocking it out of the park. I know for sure that NXT was interested in saying, 'Hey, if Britt is available please let us know,' and I know AEW was interested in me as well. It was an interesting back and forth of 'it'd be cool if you came here' or 'it'd be cool if I came there,' but we were both under contract. Not much we could do, but we did fantasize about those things."

Cole debuted for AEW at All Out 2021 (5 September), doing so on a pay-per-view that saw Baker defend her Women's World Title against Kris Statlander.
