Backstage Update On New Duo Coming To WWE SmackDown (WWE News)
This idea could launch NXT's Ethan Page into the big time on WWE's main roster.
WrestleVotes are reporting that "several within WWE would like to see the current pairing of Chelsea Green and NXT North American Champion Ethan Page appear on SmackDown in the near future". They've been turning heads with recent work on the third brand, and those with the power to bring the act up a level from NXT > main roster have been impressed by what they're seeing.
It's believed that sticking Page next to an established trio like Green, Piper Niven and Alba Fyre could help to make him "a key player" on SmackDown overnight. That's a logical strategy, and it's likely Ethan did himself no harm by entering a strong performance on guest commentary during the 30 May episode of blue brand TV.
Throughout, he came across as slick and well-spoken, and he carried himself like a major star capable of making a splash on WWE's bigger shows. Now, it looks like Triple H and his creative team fancy taking the next step with 'All Ego'. The sheer amount of charisma on display if he's sharing more screen time with Chelsea will be special.
Interestingly enough, WrestleVotes called their pairing part of a "newly minted Canadian faction". Technically, that isn't true - Niven and Fyre are Scottish, but both countries are Commonwealth cousins so WWE could swing things in that direction to explain the link. There's also little doubt that Page deserves a crack on SmackDown after his sterling work on the developmental brand since jumping over from AEW last year.
Opinion: It's Giving WCW's Team Canada Vibes
If we could be serious for a minute.
Pictured above is Lance Storm and Major Gunns on an episode of WCW Nitro in 2000. Together, they formed part of Lance's heel faction Team Canada. Other core members included Elix Skipper, Mike Awesome and Jim Duggan (bizarrely) during the group's run, but Storm was always the main man in it.
Obviously, Green is a far more talented all-rounder than Gunns ever was. That's not meant as a knock at the Major, but she was drafted in exclusively due to her looks during a time in the industry when that was far more important than women's wrestling. Things have changed. Now, WWE expects female talent to be more than just beautiful. They need to be good inside the ring and on the mic too.
In effect, this newer Canadian-inspired faction could be a vast improvement on WCW's version. There was another Team Canada in TNA years later. That helped give fresh faces like Robert Roode and Petey Williams their start in the company.
It's a no-brainer to bring the chemistry Chelsea and Ethan have shown as a double act up to WWE's main roster soon, and it looks likely to happen.
