So after a whole host of fair to middling matches from Bret Hart at WrestleMania, the top four includes three legitimate classics and one exceptionally good match. The latter comes to us from WrestleMania VIII, where the Hit Man challenged 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper for the Intercontinental Championship. Bret had lost the strap earlier in the year to The Mountie (of all people), who dropped it just days later to Piper at the Royal Rumble.

Both men were popular babyfaces at the time, and matches between two good guys were still rare enough to feel like a true spectacle and event. Looking back it is clear that both had a lot to prove too; Piper was coming to the end of his run as an in-ring competitor and arguably hadn't had a good to great match since his battle with Adrian Adonis at WrestleMania III.

Hart was at the beginning of his singles run, and wanted to show that there was more to professional wrestling than big guys and body slams.

As such, the two put on a fantastic traditional wrestling match, trading counters throughout. Piper plays the de facto heel here, spitting at Bret in an attempt to get under his skin. Thirteen minutes of excellent wrestling follows, before the iconic finish where Bret countered Roddy's sleeper into a pinning combination of his own.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
