Before Cena and Brock had a pair of classics against each other years later in their careers, they first had one hell of a bout at Backlash 2003.

Cena was a heel at this point, and while he was in a Championship match, he still didn’t have a lot of credibility to his name. After winning an eight man tournament on SmackDown, he got his title shot against Lesnar in the biggest match of his career to that point.

Five minutes into the bout, Brock was busted open when he was thrown into the steel steps. It ended up being one of the few times in his career that he has spent the majority of the match taking a beating. Cena continued to kick at the face of The Beast to open him up even more, as well as hitting him with strong clotheslines, and trying to make him pass out with some submission work.

Eventually, Brock fought his way out, and kicked out of a low-blow. Cena tried to end things with a steel chain, but was greeted with an F-5. It certainly isn't their best match so far, but it was a sign of what they would eventually be capable of delivering in the ring together .

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
