Former WWE wrestler and UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez is to remain in jail after being denied bail on attempted murder charges for a second time.

Monday saw Velasquez appear in a Santa Clara, California court, angling for his bail to be set at $1 million. His legal team's proposal included the 39-year-old wearing an electronic tracking bracelet, being bound to his home, and potential 24/7 supervision.

Judge Shelyna Brown made the following statement when issuing her denial:-

"This was such a reckless disregard for human life. In this case, it is not just Mr. Goularte and his family. It is every single citizen who was in danger of being shot or rammed with the vehicle at the time of this seven mile chase. So, this court is not thinking of not only of Mr. Goularte and his family but this court is considering every single citizen in Santa Clara county who was in proximity to this alleged incident.”

Velasquez was arrested on 28 February 2022, having allegedly shot at Harry Goularte Jr., who is accused of committing acts of child sexual abuse against a young member of the former UFC champion's family. The bullet missed Goularte Jr., hitting his stepfather instead, with the incident occurring after a traffic change.

2 March saw Velasquez appear in court for the first time, charged with attempted first-degree murder, shooting at a motor vehicle, and more. He failed in his first attempt at being granted bail five days later.

Velasquez has a plea hearing in court on 10 June. If convicted, he potentially faces between 20 years and life in prison.
