Cesaro, Dolph Ziggler And The Curse Of Consistency In WWE
The post-WrestleMania 32 episode of Raw heralded the return of Cesaro, who had been out for several months with a shoulder injury. This was undoubtedly the correct time to bring him back and the rabid fans in Dallas greeted his arrival with unbridled joy. This joy will no doubt turn to frustration once Cesaro finds himself slipping down the pecking order because, although he was brought back in the show's main event, history has taught us that Cesaro will not be there for long.
Hell, this is the guy that Vince McMahon publicly derided during his appearance on the Stone Cold Podcast, talking down his connection to the audience and suggesting that he lacked certain skills, along with the 'it factor', to be a top player - and this was after Austin, one of the biggest draws in the business, put him over strong and sung his praises. Vince did at least notice that the multilingual Cesaro was an exceptional in-ring talent.
To Cesaro's credit, he took the criticism to heart and seemed to really step up his game in the aftermath. Not only did he and Tyson Kidd win the WWE Tag Team Titles shortly after, but when Kidd went down with a serious neck injury and Cesaro was left to his own devices, he really appeared to come into his own.
The 'Cesaro Section' is a testament to WWE fans recognising his talent and ability and telling the company that 'hey, this is our guy'. Before he went off to have surgery for his torn rotator cuff, the former Paul Heyman Guy was producing some of the best stuff of his WWE career against Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns and Sheamus, supposedly impressing the head honcho in the process.
Has he impressed him enough to warrant a major push now that he's back in the fold? Time will tell on that one. The worry is that his return to the main event of Raw (in a match featuring a few other so-called 'internet darlings') was simply a carrot for the post-WrestleMania Raw crowd.
Cesaro could come out next week on Raw to face Baron Corbin, only to be counted out and destroyed in the post-match, as was Ziggler's fate this past Monday. More than likely he'll have a decent, back-and-forth fifteen minute match with a Chris Jericho or a Miz, though.
After all, this is his natural element, or so it seems destined to be.
