Watch all of Daniel Bryan's WrestleMania matches in chronological order, concluding with this one from 2020, and that change in atmosphere will jump right out at you.

WrestleMania 36 was pre-taped in the WWE Performance Centre during a global pandemic, and so certain sacrifices were made to the card. Fortunately, this title match between Bryan and his consummate professional equal, Sami Zayn, came out just fine.

Intercontinental Champion, Sami Zayn took his role of slippery coward by the horns and spent half the match ducking for cover, while his lackeys, Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura flanked. When the in-ring stuff did get underway, the underhanded shenanigans were countered with some slick grappling. The in-ring storytelling swiftly subsided to a wrestling contest worthy of the occasion.

This was Daniel Bryan's second bid for the IC title at Mania, and though he lost, it had a lot more weight to it than his ladder match of 2015. Sami Zayn's cheat to victory was fabulously unjust.

The choreography was excellent, serving up a good example of when WrestleMania 36 succeeded in livening up a vacuous empty arena.
