Davey Richards Interview: Joining MLW, Opera Cup, Returning To Wrestling & More

Beyond Tom Lawlor, who else are you excited to wrestle in MLW?

Richards: I mean, how time do you got? I came to MLW because of their roster and their vision with wrestling as a sport which is something I've been very outspoken about. My favorite opponent will always be TJP because he's so freaking good. I'm excited for Tom Lawlor. I really want to wrestle Alex Shelley. I mean, who doesn't? Bobby Fish and I have some unfinished business from another company from back in the day. It's really good.

Very few people are as talented as Jacob Fatu, so I'm really excited for that. Alexander Hammerstone, Richard Holiday. I need to find me a new tag team partner and go after the Von Erichs. Calvin Tankman is a scary dude, but that's an inevitable challenge. I'm excited for all of it to be honest with you. The first thing is to get through Lawlor, which is no small task.

What are you thinking when you hear that guys like Alex Shelley and Bobby Fish are also signing with MLW to compete in the Opera Cup? What does that say about MLW being the place to be right now?

Richards: Good. My reaction is good, because that's competition. I don't want to be in a company where one person's up here and everyone else is down here. The great thing about this tournament is that anyone can win it and it wouldn't surprise anybody. There is no underdog. I enjoy that competition. Everyone's got an instinct why to be in this tournament. That goes far beyond a cup, a title or anything.

If Bobby Fish wants to show who they let go, they'll pay for it. I want to prove I'm still the best in the world. Tom wants to prove he's not just a mixed martial arts crossover. He wants to prove he's the best professional wrestler. Calvin Tankman wants to prove he belongs here and he's someone to pay attention to. Everyone has this instinctive why and that's very important.

Everyone comes in obviously wanting to win the tournament, it's one of the oldest, most prestigious tournaments in the world, but also everyone has something personal to prove and I think that just draws the best competition out of anyone.
