Dusty Rhodes Tribute: 10 Awesome Moments To Remember

5. Nearly Losing An Eye

Dusty Rhodes and The Road Warriors were three of the most popular stars in all of Jim Crockett Promotions, and the Warriors were booked as an unstoppable force that all the heels were terrified of. The trio had a run as the Six Man Tag Team champions and looked to be an unbreakable alliance. Just imagine WWE trying to have a six man tag team division today; they can barely properly book more than one title at a time, yet 1980s era Crockett had no less than six championships which were all treated as important and hotly contested. In 1988, The Road Warriors turned heel on their longtime allies and engaged in a feud with their former partner. Dusty booked an angle where Animal removed a spike from his shoulder pads and tried to pry out his eye, causing a massive loss of blood and the executives at Turner Broadcasting to throw a fit, The move actually cost Rhodes his job, but it was such a stark moment of violence that it still sticks with fans today. Unfortunately turning the hugely popular Warriors heel was a miscalculation as they were just far too over for it to be effective, and it wasn't long before they were back in the good graces of the fans battling villains once again.
