Since 2012, the G1 Climax winner has, in addition to claiming the prestigious trophy, been granted an opportunity at one of the major championships in the company. In spite of this, the IWGP Heavyweight Champion takes part, hoping to solidify their place at the summit of Japanese pro wrestling.

Okada's 2017 has been God-tier. His singles matches with the likes of Omega, Suzuki and Shibata have all been wrestling gold. Knowing we'll be getting at least nine more matches in the space of a few weeks is a salivating prospect.

Despite being a two-time victor, Okada's chances are low simply because the tournament is the ideal opportunity to identify his Wrestle Kingdom 12 opponent.

While The Rainmaker can't be ruled out, by virtue of being The Rainmaker, the G1 is simply not designed for the IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
