With this being just the third Takeover with the women going on last, these two had big shoes to fill. Actually, no, considering how good the first two were, they had HUGE shoes to fill.

While they had no chance of ever filling those shoes, the pair was able to deliver a match worthy of going on last almost 6 years after their predecessors did. Gonzalez was able to complete a career-long character arc of going from a green, rookie jobber, to a dominant force who could credibly topple the star that is Io Shirai.

Granted, all of Gonzalez’s green tendencies weres on show with her multiple missteps throughout the contest. But Shirai, as classy as ever, was able to carry her through the whole thing, making sure her confidence wasn’t shaken and as a result, the match didn’t take a massive hit. Shirai through everything at Gonzalez, which made the young star look like an unbeatable beast by swatting it all off like a fly.

The right move was made at the right time and it was a refreshing change to see NXT get behind one of its homegrown talents for the first time in a long time.
