4. The Royals (1995)

Triple H, Kane, Jerry 'The King' Lawler and King Mabel. Three Hall of Famer shoo-ins and a big man on the heels of a serious push. No matter your view on the individuals involved, that is a pretty strong Survivor Series team.

Except it wasn't. This quartet came together in 1995 to face The Darkside, a team consisting of The Undertaker, Fatu, Henry Godwinn and Savio Vega. Why weren't they called The Bone Street Krew? Anyway, 'Taker and (actual) friends demolished The Royals, with the Deadman pinning three men before Mabel was counted out.

Triple H was still Hunter Hearst Helmsley, a Connecticut blue blood taking his first tentative steps in WWE. Kane was Isaac Yankem, the evil dentist, brought to the WWE by a legendary King in the final years of his in-ring career. Lawler, obviously, not Mabel.

The Royals were a great team on paper, albeit a team that was simultaneously before and ahead of its time. It is no great surprise that they were swept by a zombie mortician, a hog farmer, a Headshrinker looking to make a difference and whatever Savio Vega was supposed to be. A really tough Puerto Rican? That'll do.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
