Backlash made a triumphant return to WWE's pay per view calendar after seven years on the shelf, giving SmackDown the immediate edge in the renewed brand war.

The show is best remembered for AJ Styles capturing the WWE Championship, a previously unthinkable occurrence until his amazing January debut and consistently stellar performances.

The undercard was full of similarly significant moments. Becky Lynch became the inaugural SmackDown Women's Champion, last eliminating Carmella, while popular underdogs Heath Slater and Rhyno won the tag titles to a raucous reception.

The Miz and Dolph Ziggler also added to the show's overall quality, taking one another to the limit over the Intercontinental Championship (although their best encounter wouldn't occur until No Mercy the following month).
