It's unfair to judge a pay per view based entirely on its main event, but without John Cena and Edge's Last Man Standing war, Backlash 2009 would probably be remembered as one of the worst in event history. Thankfully, the main eventers helped propel it into middle-of-the-road territory.

Their bout was an incredibly intense one, displaying the natural chemistry that the pair shared throughout their rivalry. The ending - which saw Big Show interfere and chokeslam Cena into a spotlight - divides opinion, but it at least helped play into Edge's opportunist persona (as he undeservingly made off with the World Heavyweight Championship).

The undercard, however, was almost entirely disappointing. A very uninspiring six-man tag bout saw Legacy defeat the mish-mash team of Triple H, Batista and Shane McMahon, while the Hardy Boyz were sadly unable to get the best out of an 'I Quit' stipulation laden with potential.

Special mention must be given, however, to Chris Jericho's 12-minute victory over Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat - in which the old-timer proved that true class is permanent.
