The second ever Casket Match saw The Undertaker challenge Yokozuna for the WWE Championship. The first to officially use the Casket Match title, the bout was a considerable improvement over the previous one. Over three years into his WWE career, The Undertaker wasn’t quite as held back by his gimmick. So although he continued to stalk slowly, he was beginning to show off his athleticism and agility in the ring.

Despite their opposing styles, ‘Taker and Yokozuna just seemed to click in the ring and, considering the size of both men, it was a pleasant surprise to see quite a lot of fast-paced action. Unlike Kamala, Yokozuna showed no fear of The Undertaker, and that allowed this battle to be intense and at times, unusually violent for its era – a stark contrast to its predecessor.

The kooky ending which saw The Undertaker mauled by ten superstars and rise to the heavens has gone down in WWE history as one of the Casket Match’s most infamous moments. The match-type allows the audience to suspend their disbelief and that’s exactly what happened here. It conveyed just how rich this concept (and the character of The Undertaker) was. While not the first of its kind, it felt like this was when the Casket Match was officially born.
