During the height of the Ruthless Aggression Era, realism had begun to seep into WWE. There was no longer any Ministry or Brood, and The Undertaker had abandoned his unearthly powers for a bandana and motorcycle. This shift represented a changing direction for the company and signalled the end for many of WWE’s supernatural forces. Due to this, there was a significant Casket Match drought.

However, the stipulation made a surprising return in 2002 during Triple H and Kane’s reviled Katie Vick storyline. It was a rather unusual Casket Match, with a completely different type of casket placed on the far side of the ring, but the match itself was one heck of an entertaining main event. Kane and Triple H always gelled well in the ring together and this match was proof of that. Both men were in their prime and were Raw’s two biggest stars at the time. Thus, we were essentially witnessing a PPV main event on television. It didn’t disappoint and was the hard-hitting brawl we expected from these two. The return of Shawn Michaels (who popped out of the casket) had the audience even more invested in the match’s finish.

Though there weren’t many gimmicky moments, the hatred that boiled over between these two superstars was enough to warrant the return of the Casket Match. Moreover, with the uneasiness of the accompanying storyline, this was the perfect way to let this controversial rivalry rest in peace.
