When The Undertaker retired the biker gimmick and returned to his darker roots at WrestleMania XX, it was only a matter of time until the Casket Match followed. This finally happened at the following year’s Royal Rumble when he took on Heidenreich. The newcomer had become a recurring thorn in The Phenom’s side, so ‘Taker resurrected his own match to end this feud once and for all.

Being The Undertaker’s first Casket Match in six years, the psychological warfare played into this one big time. In many ways, it was like watching one of the old school Casket Matches and the interference from Snitsky and Kane really added to this. The match itself was a physical, hard-fought brawl between two strikers that never outstayed its welcome. There were also a lot of memorable spots, including Heidenreich ramming the casket into ‘Taker and The Deadman’s Leg Drop onto the casket lid with Heidenreich underneath it.

All in all, it was a welcome return for the Casket Match with callbacks to many of the best moments from those that came before. The Undertaker had put the WWE Universe on notice — Casket Matches were back from the dead.
