Number of Reigns: 4

Total Length: 292 Days

There’s really no argument against calling Stone Cold the greatest WWE Champion of the 1990s. After all, it was him and his rise in popularity that saved the company and put wrestling on the map as an important and relevant cultural entity. Without Steve Austin, there would be no Attitude Era, and thus, no widespread mainstream success of WWE.

While marred by nonsense booking and hotshotting that was commonplace in its era, it was ultimately Stone Cold’s presence as World Wrestling Federation champion that lured the crowds and gave the people a hero they could get behind. Through Vince’s experimentation throughout the decade with all-American Adonises, giants, and dancing pretty boys, it was this no-nonsense, beer-swilling Texan who truly connected with the fans and gave them a hero of the '90s. So while it was only through the tail-end that he got to enjoy his success, it’s hard not to admit Steve Austin was very much WWE for the '90s.
