'The Hammer' wasn't the most colourful competitor as WWE moved into a dayglo new era under the auspices of Vince McMahon Jnr, but he had a good line in being an utterly despicable heel, teeing up the title for some stints with some of the greatest villains in the history of the industry.
The original workhorse to hold a gold associated with the term, he'd infamously "not get warmed up for the first 30 minutes" according to commentator Gorilla Monsoon. This perhaps explained why some of his outings drifted dangerously close to tedium.
