While the cash-in itself wasn’t terrible, nor the talented Del Rio being a bad choice for WWE Champion, the timing of the event was what made it so bad.

By mid-2011, fans around the world were enjoying the Summer of Punk. At the Money in the Bank, Punk had stayed John Cena and apparently left the company. On his return, he stared down Cena as he had just won a title match to become a new WWE Champion. Both men clashed at the SummerSlam, with Punk becoming the undisputed champion.

Shortly after the match, a returning Kevin Nash gave the Straight Edge Superstar a Jackknife Powerbomb and left him laying. Alberto Del Rio made his way to the ring, gave Punk a Step-Up Enziguri, and left as the new WWE Champion.

This event, and the following feud between Punk, Triple H, and Kevin Nash put out the fire of Punk’s time at the top and left the entire aura of the Summer of Punk dead in the water.
