1. Survivor Series

Although WWE’s constant reiteration that ‘Fantasy Warfare Just Got Real’ was incredibly annoying, it actually wound up being mostly true. Survivor Series has felt like the runt of the Big Four litter for the last few years, and traditional SS matches have often been relegated to story-less lower-card filler. Survivor Series 2016 looked to change that – it featured a stacked card of traditional tag matches, Sami Zayn vs The Miz, and a shocking and controversial Goldberg vs Lesnar main event.

Each tag match highlighted the best that RAW and Smackdown Live had to offer, and while it seemed like the show had been put together simply to put RAW over, everything changed when RAW’s ‘best male competitors’ took on their blue brand counterparts.

In a match that lasted roughly an hour(!), The Wyatt Family, Braun Strowman, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho and Shane McMahon delivered an absolute belter of a match. This was ‘fantastical’ in every sense – future feuds were teased, old rivalries and friendships were revived, and the entire thing descended into the very best kind of chaos, before The Wyatt Family (and Smackdown Live) stood tall as winners.

Your mileage with Survivor Series may depend heavily on your opinion of the Brock vs Goldberg ‘event’ (or your capacity to endure five hours of six commentators arguing about which of two colours is best), but it’s hard to argue that Survivor Series wasn’t the most dramatic and exciting PPV of 2016.
